Questions about International Relocation

How much does a corporate relocation cost?
The cost of a corporate relocation will vary according to many factors, including the size of the household to be relocated, the specific services required, the amount of goods to be shipped, and the destination country. Our dedicated account managers will always work with you to put together a detailed plan which itemises all your requirements, and from this we will be able to present you with a firm cost.
What should we do about medical issues?

Before your international relocation you should:

  • Obtain your family’s medical and dental records, and notify your GP that you’re leaving the country
  • Follow Premier’s advice about any vaccination requirements
What should we do about passport and immigration issues?

Before your international relocation you should:

  • Check all your family members’ passports are valid
  • Follow Premier’s advice on visas and other immigration requirements
What should I do about my state pension and other benefits?

If you are a UK National, you should inform the pension service part of the Department of Work Pensions (DWP) before your departure. You can telephone or write to:

What should I do about financial issues?

Before your international relocation you should:

  • Notify your bank of your move (if you are a UK National with a deposit account, interest earned in your absence should be free of UK Tax)
  • Make arrangements to open bank and credit card accounts at your destination
  • request bank and credit references for use overseas
  • advise any life insurance companies of your intentions and arrange continued payment of premiums if required (generally net of tax)
  • locate marriage and birth certificates.
What about schools?
Notify your children’s school and arrange for school records to be forwarded to the new school.
What about our pets?

Premier will advise on regulations and help organise the transportation of pets.

Can I transport firearms?

Please advise Premier well in advance of the move if you wish to transport shotguns or firearms to your new location. Current security regulations throughout the world require that shotguns and firearms are transported separately from your household goods and personal effects. We can make arrangements for this, provided we are informed of your requirements.

What about food and alcohol?

Dispose of alcohol, if at all possible, as this can cause problems at customs overseas. Please advise Premier if you do intend to ship alcohol. Begin reducing your supply of frozen food.

What about personal effects and clothing?

You should put any personal items that you will carry with you to one side. These should include the following:

  • passports
  • important documents
  • work permits
  • purchase invoices for new or valuable items
  • jewellery
  • money
  • airline tickets
  • toys

Make sure you have enough clothes to keep you going until your airfreight or sea freight shipment arrives – this could be around two weeks.

Do I need to check my travel details?

Yes. Re-confirm air tickets and flight details at least 48 hours before departure.

Questions about your move

How much does a move cost?

The best way to find out how much your move might cost is for a Premier Relocation representative to visit your home. Our move consultant will walk through your home with you to assess your requirements for the move, including the following:

  • Items you want to take
  • Items you’re planning to leave behind
  • Anything you’re planning to put into storage
  • Details of any individual pieces that require special packing.

Following this survey, we’ll be able to provide a firm price for your move.

How long does a survey take?

For an average sized property, a survey should take less than an hour. This time is spent understanding your requirements, assessing the volume of your move and answering any questions you may have.

Who organises access and parking?

It’s up to you to make sure there is suitable access for our vehicle at both collection and delivery addresses. If you are unsure about your accessibility it’s best to let your move consultant know so Premier can arrange an alternative access check at your delivery address.

It is also your responsibility to ensure there is adequate parking at both addresses to avoid any delays on the day of the move. If local parking permits or cones would be necessary, you should contact your local council office to arrange this. It’s also a good idea to let you neighbours know that a removal van will be parked outside your house.

Can you assemble and disassemble furniture?

Yes we can, providing it is not a specialist assemble or disassemble. It’s helpful if you can find any specialist tools needed for this, such as item-specific allen keys, in advance.

Do you provide storage?

Yes. We offer storage services both at the point of origin and at destination. We offer discounted rates for consignments we are also shipping overseas for storage. We are also able to offer highly competitive rates to suit individual requirements.

What about insurance valuations?

At least 4 weeks before your moving day you should prepare a detailed valuation of your effects to move for insurance purposes (based on replacement value at destination). You should store or dispose of any effects that you do not wish to move overseas.

Can I move my washing machine?

Yes – If you are moving your washing machine, do ensure that you have the drum securing bolts or bar supplied by the manufacturer and secure the drum after you have completed your last load of washing. The packing crew may be able to assist you with fitting these on the day of the packing but the onus is on you to provide them with the parts and to advise them that it has not already been done. Have all operator manuals for your electrical items ready to be packed.

Can I help label boxes to be moved?

Yes. Ensure that you have labelled everything clearly, ie AIR/SEA/STORAGE/DO NOT PACK, etc, for our packers. Premier will provide you with the stickers.

What should I do the day of the move?

Follow this checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything important on the day:

  • Remove all CDs and DVDs from their players – don’t forget any that may be stored in the banks or turntables of multi-disc units. If you can find a locating screw on the underside of the unit, turn this to the ‘locked’ position.
  • Remove toner cartridges from printers and dispose of them – leaking cartridges inside a machine can cause major damage
  • Back up the information in your computer and send it independently of your household goods
  • If you still have the original packing for items like televisions or stereos, advise the packers of this when they arrive at your home
  • Make sure you have any food or drink you need on moving day easily available.

Other questions:

What about my utility providers?
Ask for final electricity, gas, water and telephone bills and arrange disconnection if required. Do not arrange disconnection of your telephone until the end of the last day of the removal so that we can maintain contact. If you disconnect your phone earlier, please ensure we have your mobile phone number.
What about subscriptions and rental arrangements?
Cancel subscriptions (or arrange forwarding) of any magazines, book clubs, etc. Cancel all rental agreements, memberships, etc. Return any rented or borrowed items e.g. library books, video tapes, etc.
What about contact and forwarding addresses?
Notify Premier of your contact address and telephone number in the UK and overseas after you move out of your home. Notify Premier of the delivery address (if known) and advise us of any possible access difficulties and parking regulations. Advise insurance companies, finance companies and so on of your change of address. Arrange for all your mail to be forwarded.
